The Importance of Holistic Health

As the COVID-19 pandemic stretches on and restrictions continue to impact many of our favorite places during these cold, dark winter months, all of it might have affected you mentally and physically. Your energy, motivation, mood and sleep quality may have dipped. Keep in mind that many factors contribute to health. Once you start eating better and exercising more, your energy, motivation, mood and sleep will improve. Now that these areas have improved, you’ll feel even more motivated to eat healthy and exercise.

Set goals for yourself, such as making one new recipe a week, buying more fruits and vegetables, tracking your daily food intake using an app such as MyFitnessPal, learning one new exercise a day, doing a different outdoor activity once a week, or exercising for 30 minutes five days a week. If there is a long list of things you would like to change about your nutrition and exercise habits, don’t try to change them all at once. Focus on one or two improvements at a time, and over the course of a few months you can make significant progress.

To maximize results in your workouts, it’s not simply a matter of putting in the time. To be most effective, you need to be in a positive frame of mind, well rested and eating well. Additionally, you need to learn the proper form for your exercises and incorporate a balance of strength, flexibility and cardio training. You’re much better off doing high quality workouts (targeting all the muscle groups with proper technique) in a short duration of time than you are doing long but poor-quality workouts.

The same applies to nutrition. To maximize the benefits of eating healthy, you need to be in a positive frame of mind, well rested and exercising. A person might choose a less healthy meal for convenience. For example, putting a frozen pizza in the oven takes less effort than preparing a healthy meal from scratch. However, unhealthy food choices lead to low energy levels. If you’re feeling sluggish throughout the day, your daily tasks will take you more time and you’ll be less productive. If you want to save yourself time and be more productive, you need to take the time to prepare homecooked healthy meals.
